Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in commemoration of the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the French expeditionary forces in the Battle of Puebla, on May 5th, 1862.
Fiestas Patrias
Fiestas Patrias, which falls on September 16th, is a national celebration in commemoration of Mexico's first proclamation of independence from Spain in 1810. Father Miguel Hidalgo, from Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, prepared the people for rebellion against Spanish rule. Father Hidalgo proclaimed the rebellion in the famous "El Grito de Dolores" for independence by ringing the local church bell.
